Case Study 12Meter Bar Straightening: The Requirement

This case study 12meter bar straightening article reviews a long-bar project from the machine builder's side. Müşteri bir talepte bulundu doğrultma makinesi for solid steel bars with diameters from 20 ile 80 mm, in lengths up to 12 M, in both structural steel and stainless steel, and specified a straightness of 0.15 mm per meter for the finished bars. Those three lines carried the whole project, because each of them reaches past the machine itself into measurement, handling and process control.

The bar size does the first part of the work. A range of 20 ile 80 mm diameter across 12 m of length pushes frame rigidity, roller spacing and drive sizing to limits that ordinary bar machines never see. The 0.15 mm/m specification does the second: it makes the measurement and support conditions part of the machine specification, because a number that tight is meaningless until you state how it will be verified. The material mix does the third. Structural steel and stainless steel respond differently to repeated bending, so the correction parameters had to be requalifiable per material family rather than fixed once on a sample bar and left alone.

A workshop video from our StraighteningTech channel shows the machine built for this requirement in operation: Çapı olan çubuklar nasıl düzeltilir 20-80 mm ve uzunluğuna kadar 12 M.

What a Per-Meter Bar Straightness Specification Governs

Bar straightness specified per meter of length constrains local curvature everywhere along the bar, not just the deviation between the two end points. Kısa yarıçaplı bir bükülmeye sahip bir çubuğun genel pruvası küçük görünse bile metre başına sınırını aşıyor, while a gentle long-wave bow may stay inside it. That distinction decides where the correction effort goes: the machine has to work the full length of the bar, and the inspection has to sample enough of that length to catch local violations instead of trusting two end readings.

Commercial bar standards show how tightly per-meter straightness is normally held, and how it is verified. In BS EN 10278, the straightness tolerance for bright round bars is a 1.0 mm maximum gap, and the British Stainless Steel Association's summary of the standard describes the preferred verification: "supporting the bar on a suitable surface to eliminate or minimise sagging," then checking that "if a 1 metre long straight edge is placed on the bar at any position, then the maximum gap between the bar and straight edge is measured by a suitable means such as inserting feeler gauges." The standard also describes a dial gauge method as an alternative. Measured that way, the 0.15 mm/m specification in this case is roughly seven times tighter than what a commercial bright bar tolerance allows, which is why neither an off-the-shelf machine nor a casual inspection plan was a realistic option.

The choice of straightening method follows from the same distinction. Multi-roller straightening addresses a per-meter limit by working the bar continuously along its length, while press straightening concentrates correction at discrete points. The trade-offs between the two routes are compared in our article on Pres ile silindirle doğrultma karşılaştırması.

Why Slenderness Drives the Machine Concept

A bar twelve meters long with a diameter at the thin end of 20 mm has a length-to-diameter ratio of 600:1. At that slenderness the bar is not a rigid body. It sags under its own weight between any two supports, and the sag is a large fraction of the straightness budget. Makine konseptine ilişkin her şey bu tek olgudan kaynaklanmaktadır: destek ve makara düzeni, çubuğun sarkmasına izin vermek yerine uzunluğu boyunca taşımalıdır, ölçüm tanımlanmış bir destek durumunda yorumlanmalıdır, ve istasyonlar arasındaki taşıma, makinenin daha sonra kaldırmak zorunda kalacağı yeni kıvrımlara neden olmamalıdır.

Machines for long bars are engineered as parameterized systems, not one-off builds. A 2025 study in the journal Metals by Jia et al. documents a production eleven-roll straightener "specifically designed for straightening bars with diameters ranging from φ45 mm to φ150 mm," equipped with a semi-automatic control system "which allows for the adjustment of roll inclination angle, rulo boşluğu, and roll reduction to accommodate different bar specifications and materials." The same logic applies at 12 M: roller spacing, frame stiffness and drive sizing are selected against the bar family, and the adjustable parameters cover the spread within it.

Handling deserves its own line in the specification, çünkü bu uzunluktaki parçalarda bu kaliteli bir süreçtir, lojistik değil. 12 metrelik çubuğu yanlış yerden kaldırmak onu büker; Aktarım sırasında bir ucun düşmesine izin vermek, ucun yakınında yeni bir bükülme yaratır. Bu sınıftaki çubuklar yükleme ve boşaltma sırasında uzunlukları boyunca desteklenir, and the infeed and outfeed tables are treated as part of the straightening system rather than as conveyors. Readers running similar long sections — bizim uzun çelik çubuk silindirle doğrultma çözümü Ve asansör kılavuz rayı üretimi follow the same logic — will recognize that half the achieved straightness is decided before the bar ever reaches the rollers.

Measuring a 12-Meter Bar: Support State Is Half the Reading

On iki metrelik bir çubukta, a straightness number is only meaningful in a stated support condition. Uzak destekler arasında sarkan çubukla yapılan okuma, parça kadar kurulumu da ölçer. Long-bar projects therefore fix the measurement state — on centers, tanımlanmış desteklerde, or in the customer's inspection state — before anyone argues about numbers. How the measurement is instrumented follows the same discipline: değiş tokuşlar şu makalemizde karşılaştırılmıştır: Temaslı ve temassız doğrusallık ölçümü.

The reference methods are simple, which is exactly why the support state carries so much weight. BS EN 10278's preferred route supports the bar on a suitable surface to eliminate or minimise sagging and checks a one-metre straight edge at any position with feeler gauges. For verification with rotation, patent EP3093611A2 describes the traditional method: the straightness error "is measured by placing the bar under examination on two bearings, by making the bar rotate over 360° and by measuring with a comparator the maximum camber change of the point placed on the upper generatrix of a selected section," after which "the measured value must be divided by two," with the measuring base given by the distance from the closest bearing. The patent is frank about the cost of that accuracy: the technique is very accurate but time-consuming, and therefore not suitable for use in a production line. Production equipment closes that gap by instrumenting the measurement. Bizim oil drill pipe straightening machine is one example of the approach: a contact-measuring design with 19 adjustable measuring points for workpieces from 1500 ile 10000 mm uzunluğunda.

Whatever the instrument, the discipline is the same. Define the support state, measure in it, and re-measure in the same state after every correction pass, so that the numbers being compared describe the bar and not the setup.

Rulo Doğrultma: Working the Bar Along Its Full Length

Roller straightening corrects curvature by feeding the bar through a train of inclined rolls that bend it alternately in opposite directions. The mechanism is described plainly in the Metals study: "By precisely controlling the reduction settings of each inclined roll, the bar is subjected to alternating reverse bending, inducing appropriate elasto-plastic deformation. The rotation of the rolls drives both the rotation and forward advancement of the workpiece." Because the rolls both rotate and advance the bar, every point on the surface passes through the bending zones, and the correction is distributed along the full length instead of being applied at a few peaks.

The setup is not dial-in-free. The same study ranks the process parameters by their influence on the result — "roll gap > roll reduction > straightening speed > roll inclination angle" — and shows how sharply the outcome responds: "when the roll gap is 70.0 mm, the straightness is 1.39‰," and at a roll gap of 71.8 mm it "increases to 2.31‰." A 1.8 mm change in a single setting erases about two thirds of the achieved correction. Both extremes are punished: a gap that is too large leaves areas of the bar under-corrected, while an excessively small one increases roll wear and friction and can damage the bar surface — the study concludes that a reasonable roll gap is what keeps the process "preventing both over-straightening and insufficient straightening."

With optimized parameters, the study's simulated and experimental straightness after straightening were both "within 1‰," on 20CrMnTi bars in that eleven-roll configuration. The practice in this case follows the same principle at 12 M: run incremental passes, re-measure between passes in a consistent support state, and converge toward the requirement rather than forcing it in one aggressive pass.

Structural Steel and Stainless Steel Are Not One Setup

The two material families in this case differ in yield behavior and in how they respond to repeated bending, yani bir kutuya uygun bir silindir ayarı- ya da diğerinin az çalışması. The underlying phenomenon is the Bauschinger effect. The straightening roll manufacturer Witels Albert USA defines it as "a change of material parameters due to a reversal of loading direction between two consecutive loads (örneğin. tension/compression)," with the consequence that "loading against the initial loading direction results in a distinctly lower beginning of flow." The Metals study states the same effect from the process side: "after a material undergoes plastic deformation in one direction, its yield stress upon subsequent reverse loading exhibits a significant reduction," and multi-roll straightening puts bars through "multiple cycles of alternating tensile and compressive loading" exactly of that kind.

The magnitude of the effect is material-dependent. Witels Albert USA lists the governing factors as "the material, its alloying elements (particularly carbon), the number of load cycles, and the dimensions of external deformation." Structural steel and stainless steel sit at different points on every one of those axes, which is why the correction parameters in this case are material-specific. A changeover between material families is a controlled setup change, requalified on sample bars, with pass counts and settings recorded per material and diameter so that the next lot starts from evidence rather than memory. Machine Selection and Site Requirements for Long Bars

Choosing a machine for 12-meter bar work involves more than tonnage or roll count. The frame must stay rigid across the full working length; roller spacing and diameter must suit the bar family; drive sizing follows from the heaviest cross-section in the mix; and the infeed and outfeed tables, together with the handling equipment between stations, are part of the straightening system rather than accessories. Long-part machine specifications state these parameters up front — the oil drill pipe machine above, Örneğin, lists its applicable workpiece length, calibratable diameter range, straightening accuracy and measurement resolution as headline figures.

Floor space and logistics belong in the same evaluation. A 12-meter bar needs room to enter, exit and turn, and storage and transfer racks that support the bar along its length protect the straightness the machine has just produced. Buyers weighing alternatives can see how these parameters come together for a bar family in our steel shaft and bar automatic straightening solution, ve manuel ve otomatik düzeltme karşılaştırması comparison covers the automation-level decision that sits alongside them.

Bu Vaka Neyi Ortaya Çıkarıyor?

Read as an engineering exercise, the case reduces to four durable points. A per-meter straightness specification constrains local curvature everywhere along the bar, sadece uçtan uca yay değil. The support and measurement conditions define what the number means at twelve meters. Handling is a quality process in its own right, decided mostly before the bar reaches the rollers. And the material mix makes correction parameters a requalification item rather than a set-and-forget recipe.

Eğer bir değerlendirme yapıyorsanız doğrultma makinesi üreticisi uzun çubuk çalışması için, the starting point is the same one this case started from: bar cross-sections, uzunluklar, straightness specification, material families, and the measurement state in which that specification will be verified.

SSS

How many straightening passes does a 12-meter bar need?

There is no fixed count. The number of passes follows the incoming curvature — where the worst bows sit, and whether the error is a single long wave or a series of short kinks. The working method is incremental: run a pass, re-measure in the same support state, adjust, and converge toward the specification. Forcing the requirement in one aggressive pass is the expensive way to learn why.

Can a 12-meter bar be checked without a dedicated measuring machine?

Evet. The reference methods need only a support surface, a one-metre straight edge with feeler gauges, or a dial gauge; the two-bearing rotation method described above adds nothing but a pair of supports and rotation. What none of them can work without is a defined support state — agree on the state first, then measure in it.

What should be prepared before requesting a long-bar straightening machine?

The bar list (çaplar, uzunluklar, kesitler), the straightness specification together with the measurement state in which it will be verified, the material families and grades, and the handling constraints on site. With those in hand, machine sizing and roller configuration follow directly — bize Ulaşın and we will work through them for your part family.
