Define the Straightness Requirement Before Selecting the Wheel Setup

“Straightness is not very demanding” is not an acceptance criterion. The customer should define a maximum bow over the complete nail length, a deviation per gauge length, a functional go/no-go fixture or another measurable result. The inspection must state whether the nail rests on the shank, rotates between supports or passes through a guide.

The requirement should match the next operation. A nail that only needs to enter a packaging tray may use a simple functional gauge. A nail that enters an automatic driver, drilling operation or close-clearance assembly may need a tighter axis or runout control. The equipment should not be made unnecessarily complex, but it still needs a number or functional test that separates OK from NOK.

Plain and Threaded Nails Need Different Contact Strategies

A plain round shank can be supported over a broad, smooth contact area. A matched concave/convex or other contoured wheel arrangement can guide and repeatedly bend the shank while it advances. Confirm Whether Straightening Happens Before or After Thread Rolling

Many nail-production lines straighten wire before cutting, heading and thread/ring rolling. In that route, the straightening tools contact plain wire and do not need to protect a finished profile. The equipment in this project appears to process individual, already formed long nails, but the final process sequence is not yet documented.

If straightening occurs after thread or ring rolling, the finished profile becomes a protected feature and the tooling must be validated on real parts. If it occurs before profiling, a simpler wheel set may be possible, but the later heading and rolling processes can introduce new bend and should be checked separately. The quotation must therefore show the exact process position rather than using “threaded nail straightening” as a generic label.

The related 89-second video shows a tray of long nails, a feed/positioning mechanism and a smooth-shank nail passing between two large opposing wheels. It provides useful evidence for the compact roller-straightening concept. It does not show threaded nails, two verified wheel sets, a numeric straightness result, automatic changeover or production throughput.

Loading and Singulation

Long nails can bridge, cross and hook together in a bulk tray, especially when heads and points interlock. The feed system should use controlled agitation, a defined escape path and a single-part gate. Length and diameter limits must prevent two nails from entering the wheels together.

The machine should detect an empty feed, double part or stalled nail and stop before the jam reaches the wheel nip. Guards must prevent hand access to the feed and rotating wheels while the machine is running.

Wheel Selection and Changeover

The operator selects the validated wheel set for the nail family. A simple system should use keyed or mechanically unique tooling so the plain-shank and profiled-shank sets cannot be installed in the wrong position. Color coding, engraved size ranges and an HMI recipe check reduce setup errors, but they do not replace physical fit and guarded trial verification.

For each wheel set, the recipe should contain gap/offset, speed, entry guide position, supported length, allowed profile contact and maximum adjustment range. Settings outside the validated window should require maintenance or supervisor access rather than routine operator changes.

The smooth nail shank enters between opposing wheels. The wheel offset creates repeated bending as the part advances, reducing the global bow without requiring the operator to identify a single press point. The head and point remain outside damaging contact.

Thread/Profile Protection

For profiled nails, the wheel faces and guides must avoid flattening the thread/ring crest or forcing the part into an incompatible rotation.
